One of
the pilots on this flight was a female and it soon became apparent she was
still training as we had quite a wobbly take off and then flew north over the Kibera shanty town area of Nairobi which houses about 2.5m people. We were told later that new housing had been offered to many but they refused to move. As strange as that sounds it is apparently quite simple, the new housing was too expensive for them.
And over the cultivated areas (at one time Kenya was wooded all over)
The landing at Lewa airstrip even had me feeling glad when we finally stopped. We were of course in no danger at any time as there was a very experienced pilot who took over when necessary.
Poor Ian, I don't think it was his most enjoyable hour.
