Mount
Kilimanjaro, although actually in Tanzania is very close to the border with
Kenya, and at 19,340ft above sea level is the highest mountain in Africa
but compared to the mighty Mt Everest (29,029 ft) it is of course quite tiny
and doesn't even come into the 100 tallest in the world.
But I
didn't know it was the largest free standing mountain (ie not part of a chain)
in the world, nor did I know it had 3 volcanoes; 2 extinct and 1 dormant.
The fast route up takes only 4-5 days and this rapid ascent makes the mountain a rather dangerous climb as it puts climbers at a greater risk of Altitude Sickness. Some 35,000 people attempt the climb annually and the success rate is directly attributable to the route taken. A lady from my camera club climbed in 2015 (she was supposed to do Everest - base camp I guess not the whole thing - but the Nepal Earthquake put paid to that. I don't know how long she took to do the climb but she made it to the top - respect!!!
