Serian - Day 3 AM

Our 16th Wedding Anniversary aaaahhhhh!

We set off at 08:00 with James and Moses and followed the river for quite a while looking at the hippos and identifying various poo (believe me, there is a wide variety to choose from).

It's hard to distinguish hippo from boulder sometimes.

Hippos are of course mainly nocturnal and create what are commonly known as Hippo Highways.  When they leave the water at night to graze, they head to the farthest point of their territory and slowly work their way back to the river, eating as they go.  Consequently as they near the river they pick up the same routes and erode the soil into quite distinctive pathways.  The nearer the river, the more pronounced the paths are and it’s amazing how such short-legged creatures actually get up the river bank.

As a special treat we had been offered a bush breakfast and James got word that there was a bull elephant roaming around between our route to the breakfast rendezvous so we had to make sure we stayed quiet and kept to single file.  A truck was also dispatched to intervene should the elephant get too close.

It was a fabulous 2 hour walk, we saw a lot of giraffe and James let us go ahead to see how close we could get before they ran off – answer: not very close.

It was an interesting walk with James pointing out the different various animal spoors etc including this buffalo skull.

Breakfast was set up for us under the shade of a lovely tree.

Somewhere to wash our hands.

And we were given a kikoy each as a present – how nice.

The fire was lit a little way a way and sausages and eggs cooked fresh for us whilst we played throw the stone with WiFi (WiFi is a dog (Labrador-Ridgeback X) and the nearest thing to internet in camp!

Certainly a Wedding Anniversary breakfast to remember.

After breakfast we were invited to look at the remains of a leopard kill up in the tree they'd been cooking under (maybe the leopard should have stayed there and got a free breakfast).

Then we made our way the quick route (20 mins) back to camp.  Keeping up with James is quite a challenge at times, I was glad I'd only taken my small, lighter lens.

A massive termite mound.

Having had such a large/late breakfast we opted to miss lunch and just have a small bit of bread and cheese and a bottle of wine on our deck.
